NEAR Registry connector for AI assistants

The National Emergency AED + Resource (NEAR) Registry connector lets AI assistants like Claude find Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and other lifesaving resources, including naloxone, bleeding control kits, and epinephrine. Just ask in plain language, for example, “Is there an AED near me?” or “What AEDs are around Oracle Park in San Francisco?”

The connector is free, requires no account or sign-in, and is read-only. It can’t add, change, or remove registry data.

In an emergency, always call 911 first.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK

Find the closest AED
Provide an address, place name, or coordinates. For addresses, include the city and state. Results are listed nearest first and include the distance.

“What is the closest AED to 3001 School Ln in Lemon Grove, CA?”

See AEDs in an area
Find AEDs around a venue, campus, or neighborhood.

“List the AEDs at California High School in San Ramon, CA.”

Find specific supplies
Search for naloxone, epinephrine, or bleeding control kits.

“Where can I find Narcan at UC Davis?”

Get details for one AED
See where it’s located on site, what supplies it has, and whether it’s available at all hours.

“Is there an AED at the Gateway Target in Springfield, OR?”

See a photo
View an image of an AED and its surroundings. Available when a photo is on file.

“Show me a picture of the AED at Burleigh Manor Middle School in Ellicott City, MD.”

Ask about the registry
Learn about its data sources, administration, and intended purpose.

“How do I contact the NEAR Registry?”

CONNECT IT

Claude (claude.ai, desktop app, and mobile)

  1. In Claude, open Customize → Connectors and browse the connector directory.
  2. Search for NEAR Registry and select Connect. No sign-in is needed.
  3. In a new chat, make sure NEAR Registry is turned on, then ask about AED locations.

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner or admin may need to allow the connector first.

OTHER AI ASSISTANTS AND DEVELOPER TOOLS

Any client that supports remote MCP servers (Model Context Protocol, the open standard for connecting AI assistants to tools) can add the server using this URL:

https://mcp.near-registry.org/mcp

The server uses the Streamable HTTP transport. No API key or sign-in is required. Connections that don’t come through Claude’s connector directory are rate-limited per network, and heavy or automated use may be temporarily blocked.

WHAT'S INCLUDED, AND WHAT ISN'T

Public details only
Results include each AED’s location, description, supplies, availability, and photo, when available. Access codes, owner and coordinator contact information, and other non-public details are not shared.

Locked cabinets
Some AEDs are in locked cabinets. Results show when a code is needed, but not the code itself. A 911 dispatcher may be able to provide it.

Private and limited-hours AEDs
Some AEDs are on private property or only reachable while the site is open. Results note this, so confirm you can reach an AED before relying on it.

Result limits
A search for the closest AEDs returns up to 5. A search for AEDs in an area returns up to 25 and covers just over half a mile by default. Results are listed nearest first, so if an area has more than 25, the farthest ones are left out. The answer won’t say that some were left out. In busy areas such as downtowns, campuses, or office parks, ask about a specific building or a smaller distance (for example, “within 500 feet”).

Registry data
Results include only AEDs and resources registered with NEAR, so unregistered AEDs won’t appear. Details are only as current as the latest update, and a listed AED may have been moved, removed, or be out of service. Registry data is provided as is.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The address can’t be found
Add the city and state (and the ZIP code, if you have it), or provide coordinates.

Results are for the wrong place
Some place names, especially buildings on a campus or in a business park, can match the wrong location. Use a street address or coordinates instead, or ask the assistant which location it searched.

You asked about AEDs “near me”
The assistant may ask for your address or location before it can search.

No results found
Try a larger area, or a nearby address or landmark.

A photo doesn’t display
Open the photo link included in the answer.

The assistant answers without using NEAR
Make sure the connector is turned on for the chat, or ask it to “use NEAR Registry.”

The NEAR Registry is unavailable
Wait a moment and try again. If it keeps happening, start a new chat.

Results or behavior seem out of date after a connector update
Disconnect and reconnect the connector, or start a new chat.

PRIVACY

The connector doesn’t require an account. Like most web services, NEAR’s servers log each request, including the network address it came from and the location searched, for security and operations. See the NEAR Registry privacy policy for details on data collection, sharing, and retention. Your conversation is also subject to your AI assistant’s privacy policy.

ADD AN AED TO THE REGISTRY

The free NEAR Registry app makes it easy to add AEDs and other emergency resources to the registry. Download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or add resources in a browser at aed.new.
